There is something especially satisfying about a canoe or kayak excursion — it’s a chance to get up close and personal with mother nature and all of her creatures. But it can also be incredibly intoxicating to take in the beauty from a relaxing vantage point.

To satisfy either preference, the Sultana Education Foundation offers two very different ways for everyone to get out on the water — sails aboard Sultana or public paddles.

The two-hour sails depart from and return to Sultana’s home port of Chestertown. Once onboard the replica schooner, passengers are invited to help raise the sails, steer using the tiller and explore the crew’s quarters as they cruise down the Chester River.

While all of the sails promise beautiful views, there are also themed sails to further the experience.

On the music sails, guests get to enjoy the sounds of the Lions of Bluegrass. On ecology sails, passengers can help catch fish, crabs and other critters with a sampling net.

Sails of all types are available many Saturdays and Sundays, beginning May 27 and running through Oct. 29, including opportunities the weekends of Chestertown’s Tea Party Festival and Sultana’s Downrigging.

Tickets are $30 per adult or $15 for those under 12. Prices increase slightly for special sails. Children under 5 are not permitted.

For those who prefer to get their hands wet, the public paddles afford that chance on select days from May 6 to Oct. 15.

There will be opportunities to view a variety of waterfowl, as well as explore a salt marsh, Mount Harmon and the remnants of ancient settlements. There is even the chance to take a kayak ride under a full moon.

The paddles are led by Sultana Education Foundation staff naturalists and the kayaks are provided. Participants only need to bring water, a snack and their binoculars.

The schedule is as follows:

• Blue Heron Paddle, Saturday, May 6

• Bald Eagle Paddle, Saturday, May 13

• Mount Harmon Tour and Paddle, Thursday, June 8
