Many brides-to-be look forward to the day when they visit a bridal salon and are able to try on gowns for the first time. There are certain tips that can make the day go much more smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it may take to find the perfect gown. • Wear a supportive, well constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available. • Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean. • Try to wear your hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding. • Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. • Proper measurements can be matched to designers’ size charts. It’s best to limit the number of people with whom you shop to 1 or 2 trusted friends or family members. An entourage can be confusing. It’s always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are between sizes.

So the dress was a little bit snug, but it was the dress of your dreams, or maybe the price was so right, it couldn’t be passed up. Of course alterations can be made, but you, like a million brides past, have committed to dropping that last five pounds before your big day. So where do you begin?

We suggest a six-week crossfit program to get the biggest results in the least amount of time.

Crossfit is “constantly varied, functional movements at high intensity,” says Michael Hurley, owner of Five Fold Crossfit in Cambridge. “We train it so that you can be more effective in your daily life and make sure you’re doing [the movements] right. Then we add intensity to that, which is where we see the incredible results.”

While crossfit has a stigma attached to its name — that only elite athletes are cut out for its boundary pushing workouts — the “crossfit community” is as diverse in its population as it is in its exercise agenda.

Crossfit does, however, incorporate total body workouts that take you out of your comfort zone. “We rarely isolate a muscle group. Most of the things we do incorporates the total body,” Michael says. “When people get started, they find muscles they never had.”

Various total body movements with high intensity are where you see the biggest changes in body shape — these workouts tone and shape your muscles, so even if the actual number on the scale doesn’t change, you’ll notice how clothes begin to fit better.

And you don’t have to worry about losing steam because you never get into a routine. “Your motivation stays way up because you don’t get bored,” Michael says. “You are constantly improving, and motivation stays up because you’re seeing results.”

Of course, if you do need motivation, just imagine yourself on the altar in that amazing wedding gown, fitting perfectly.

“I love the new philosophy on what is beautiful for women,” says Michael. “Strong women are a beautiful thing.”
